This June Cranbrook Art Museum debuts its most ambitious project to date, Landlord Colors: On Art, Economy, and Materiality. Part landmark exhibition and part epic public art series, the project features more than 60 artists from five international contemporary art scenes that have experienced economic and social upheaval.
Landlord Colors explores cross-cultural themes of artistic ingenuity and resistance in the face of societal challenges examined through the materiality of the artists’ work.
The exhibition will spotlight Detroit since the 1967 Rebellion alongside four additional art scenes: the Italian avant-garde during the domestic conflicts of the1960s-1980s, including the arte povera movement; authoritarian-ruled South Korea of the 1970s and its aftermath, including the dansaekhwa movement; embargoed Cuba from the 1990s to the present day; and contemporary Greece following the financial crisis of 2008.
Landlord Colors extends beyond the museum’s galleries to engage the city of Detroit through newly commissioned art installations, special performances, and conversations through its public programming project, Material Detroit.
