Cranbrook Art Museum To Present The World of Anna Sui

Major Exhibition Opens in October, Celebrating the Detroit-Born Fashion Icon’s Style, Music, and Storytelling

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., July 16, 2026 — Cranbrook Art Museum is pleased to present The World of Anna Sui, a major exhibition celebrating the work and creative vision of internationally acclaimed fashion designer Anna Sui. On view October 21, 2026, through February 28, 2027, the exhibition features more than 100 looks from Sui’s archive and traces the imaginative worlds that have defined her influential career for more than three decades.

There will be an exclusive ArtMember event on Sunday, October 18, where Anna Sui will also deliver a talk about her work. The exhibition then opens to the general public on Wednesday, October 21. 

Born and raised in metro Detroit, Sui emerged in the 1990s as one of fashion’s most distinctive voices, reinventing the runway with her signature blend of rock-and-roll attitude, romanticism, and historical reference. The World of Anna Sui marks a homecoming for the designer, whose work reflects the same spirit of artistic experimentation and music-driven culture that has long shaped Detroit.

Organized around twelve recurring archetypes that appear throughout Sui’s work—Americana, Androgyny, Fairytale, Grunge, Mod, Hippie/Rockstar, Nomad, Punk, Retro, Schoolgirl, Surfer, and Victorian—the exhibition offers visitors an immersive journey through the designer’s expansive creative universe. Through clothing, textiles, accessories, cosmetics, photographs, and ephemera, the exhibition reveals how Sui transforms inspirations drawn from art, music, literature, film, history, and popular culture into fully realized worlds and identities. 

“Anna’s work has always reflected her vision of a complete world,” said Dennis Nothdruft, Head of Exhibitions at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London and curator of the exhibition. “It was important for us to bring visitors into that universe through the concept and scenography of the exhibition. I hope visitors feel they have been part of Anna’s world—that she has taken them on a design journey and inspired them to live their dreams.” 

Beginning with her first runway show in 1991, Sui has shaped not only fashion, but also the way designers think about storytelling, branding, and personal identity. Her collections are populated by alter egos ranging from cowgirls and grunge girls to pirate rock stars, surfer nomads, Mods, and Pre-Raphaelite maidens.

Through these characters and narratives, Sui helped popularize the boutique fashion aesthetic and established a visual language that continues to influence designers today.

For Cranbrook Art Museum, the exhibition’s Detroit connection offers an additional layer of significance.

“Detroit is a music city, and that influence is visible throughout this exhibition,” said Laura Mott, Chief Curator at Cranbrook Art Museum and co-adapter of the exhibition. 

“Genres of music play a critical role in Anna’s artistic inspirations, from punk and grunge to mod and psychedelic rock. Seeing the exhibition here highlights the cultural environment that helped shape her creative vision.” 

Mott also notes Sui’s ongoing ties to the region, including her collaboration with musician Jack White to design the iconic black-and-yellow employee uniforms for Third Man Records in 2012. 

Presented as a series of thematic environments, the exhibition invites visitors to experience the breadth of Sui’s inspirations and creative process. “For a young girl it all starts in her bedroom,” Sui writes in the exhibition catalog, a sentiment that informed the exhibition’s immersive design. Visitors move through a series of visual and conceptual “islands,” each representing a different facet of the Anna Sui universe.

The exhibition’s metro Detroit premiere is the latest destination on its international tour, which has included previous stops in London, New York, Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, Shanghai, and Phoenix.

The exhibition was curated by Dennis Nothdruft for the Fashion and Textile Museum, London, and adapted for Cranbrook Art Museum by Laura Mott, Chief Curator, and Katy Kim, Jeanne and Ralph Graham Curatorial Fellow. The World of Anna Sui is generously supported by the George Francoeur Art Museum Exhibition Fund, the Clannad Foundation, and ArtMembers of Cranbrook Art Museum.
