Andy Warhol on Vinyl exhibit with nearly 100 album covers to make world premiere in Detroit | MLive

DETROIT, MI — Fans of Andy Warhol’s art and vinyl album covers ranging from 1949 to the late 80s should be in for a treat when the Warhol on Vinyl exhibit opens next month at the Cranbrook Art Museum.

The museum, at 39221 Woodward in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills, will have the Warhol on Vinyl exhibit open to the public from June 21 to March 15, 2015. For more information, visit the museum’s website.

The exhibit, expected to include nearly 100 album covers, is drawn from the museum’s preeminent Warhol collection that was part of a recent gift by Frank M. Edwards and Ann M. Williams, according to a museum press release.

Album covers on display are expected to range from the extremely rare to the widely recognizable. This collection will include five recently discovered Warhol album covers from the 1950s that have never before been exhibited.

A museum press release says all works of Warhol art “offer a unique lens to survey the artist’s career from a young graphic designer to a cultural phenomenon” and document the history of mass-produced vinyl records.

This exhibit will also include music, video and other forms of Warhol art from the museum’s extensive collection, including nine prints that are a recent gift from the Andy Warhol Foundation.

Warhol, a Pittsburgh native, died Feb. 22, 1987 in New York City at the age of 58. He was known as the leader of a movement known as pop art that flourished in the 1960s.

He’s been the subject of numerous books, art exhibitions and documentary films over the years, and experienced an artistic re-emergence in the 1980s.

The Detroit Free Press reported last year that Warhol’s “Double Self Portrait” on display at the Detroit Institute of Arts could be worth at least $80 million.

The 6-by-6 foot print in paint on canvas was created by Warhol in 1967 and was reportedly purchased by the nonprofit Detroit Museum of Art Founders Society for the museum.

Warhol on Vinyl: The Record Covers, 1949 – 1987+ was organized by is curated by Laura Mott. The exhibition is sponsored by the Jeanne and Ralph Graham Exhibition Fund and the Clannad Foundation.
