SUMMARY:Finland 100 The Cranbrook Connection
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Finland’s centennial of independence\, Cran
brook Art Museum presents Finland 100: The Cranbrook Connection\, an exhib
ition examining the profound influence this country has had on the develop
ment of the arts in America.\n\nDesign has always been a special strength
of Finnish culture\, exemplified by the Cranbrook campus itself. When desi
gning Cranbrook\, architect Eliel Saarinen blended vernacular Finnish roma
nticism from his native Kirkkonummi\, Finland\, with the Art Nouveau and A
rt Deco styles prominent in America at the time. Saarinen’s comprehensiv
e philosophy that one should design in the context of the next larger thin
g—from the chair to the room to the house to the city—meant that no el
ement of the built environment should be overlooked. Thus\, he and his tal
ented family designed Cranbrook as a “total work of art\,” which the N
ew York Times has called “one of the greatest campuses ever created anyw
here in the world.”\n\nLearn About The Exhibition
