Every third Thursday, from July 2023 through June 2024, visitors can receive free admission to Cranbrook Art Museum from 11am–8pm AND Cranbrook Institute of Science from 5–8pm. Cranbrook Art Museum remains free on all remaining Thursdays of each month. Visitors are requested to register in advance to visit Cranbrook Institute of Science via their website. Walk-ins are welcome, but entrance is not guaranteed due to capacity limits.

This October, join us for Free Third Thursday – Botanical Edition! Explore and experience art and design through hands-on, minds-on activities.

At Cranbrook Art Museum 6:30pm to 8pm:

Botanical Watercolors Demo with Kayla Powers

Join us for a demonstration by place-based artist Kayla Powers (CAA MFA Fiber 2023) on the process of making watercolor paints with locally grown and foraged plants. Hear about Kayla’s practice from sustainable foraging and extracting color from dye plants to creating pigment and making paint. Participants will test artist-made botanical paints and create their own postcards featuring six watercolors made from local plants.

At Cranbrook Institute of Science 5 to 8pm:

Plants Close Up

Have you looked, REALLY looked, at plants up close?  Explore fresh roots, stems, flowers, and leaves with hand lenses and microscopes for a whole new perspective on their structure and complexity.

Leaf Chromatography

In the fall, changes in daylight and temperature trigger leaf colors to change.  Experiment with chromatography to investigate the sometimes-hidden pigments in fall leaves.

Free Third Thursdays is a program sponsored by the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.
