SUMMARY:Lecture & Reception: Christy Matson
DESCRIPTION:Christy Matson is a Los Angeles-based artist known for her pain
terly approach to textiles. Matson employs a hand-operated\, computer-prog
rammable Jacquard loom to create intricate weavings to which she often app
lies paint and other fiber techniques. The artist mines her deep interests
in approaches such as collage and abstraction\, which can be found in bot
h historical as well as modernist textile traditions. Matson’s work refl
ects on the gendered histories of weaving in conjunction with art historic
al approaches such as geometric abstraction and collage.\n\nHer current ex
hibition at Cranbrook Art Museum\, Crossings\, features 16 weavings config
ured into 2 monumentally scaled tapestries that were originally conceived
for a special commission for the US Embassy in Ashgabat\, Turkmenistan.\n\
nLecture is free and open to the public. Cash bar and reception to follow
 the talk.\n\n[caption id="attachment_21964" align="alignleft" width="300"]
