SUMMARY:Monumental Connection: Shua Group
DESCRIPTION:Monumental Color: Cecily Brown\, Sam Gilliam\, and Joan Mitchel
l brings together significant artworks by three quintessential abstract
artists. Through the performance series Monumental Connection\, feature
d artists engage in dialogue with performers whose work resonates with Sam
Gilliam’s love for jazz\, Joan Mitchell’s lifelong connection to poet
ry\, and the frenetic physicality of Cecily Brown’s paintings.  \n\nCe
cily Brown (b. 1969) is recognized for her lively brushwork and narrative
compositions that synthesize historical tropes and self-referential strate
gies of European and American painting. The push and pull of the paint giv
es Brown’s body of work a dynamic sense of motion\, informed by both his
toric British hunt paintings and contemporary abstract figuration. \n\nJoi
n us for an improvised group movement performance by Shua Group\, mirrorin
g the frenetic movement and emotion in Cecily Brown’s The Hunt. \n\nShu
a Group is a performance group based in Detroit\, Michigan. They
create performances through dance\, movement\, voice\, and light.   The
works are often interactive and consider universal and contemporary
human questions.  They open a space to experience our shared humanity i
n an increasingly dissonant world.   \n\nShua Group works have been p
resented by critical US performance venues including Danspace Project\,
Judson Church\, Joyce Theatre Foundation\, and Dixon Place. Shua Group
is also the creative director of Andy – a performance and training c
enter in Detroit.  Shua Group offers creative residencies and performa
nce opportunities for local\, national\, and international artists. \n\
nThis event is free with museum admission.
