SUMMARY:Performance: Brown on Green
DESCRIPTION:Big Red Wall Dance Company will present an original\, place-bas
 ed performance work within Detroit’s 250-acre Eliza Howell Park in Septe
 mber 2019. The project explores the Black female body’s relationship to 
 Detroit’s green-spaces\, as well as issues of security and safety in pub
 lic space. The work will be accompanied by live music\, and will feature s
 elections from guest choreographers based in Detroit.\n\n__\n\nMaterial De
 troit is a series of public programs around Detroit that complement the th
 emes and artists of the Landlord Colors exhibition. This robust public art
  and performance series is a collaboration between three Detroit curators 
 and institutions: Laura Mott\, Senior Curator at Cranbrook Art Museum\; Ta
 ylor Renee Aldridge\, Founder of ARTS.BLACK\; and Ryan Myers-Johnson\, Dir
 ector of Sidewalk Festival. Material Detroit will engage residents as it c
 onnects art to vortexes of history and contemporary life across Detroit du
 ring summer 2019.\n\nBig Red Wall Dance Company was founded January 21\, 2
 011. The Company debuted Mad and Madder at an event titled Dance Race spon
 sored by Artlabj Detroit. Big Red Wall Dance Company is a Detroit based da
 nce company name after it’s founder Erika ‘Big Red’ Stowall. The com
 pany’s focus is creating work which portrays a positive black narrative.
  Big Red Wall Dance Company hopes their works create a dialogue among thei
 r audience which spreads out into the community. Their most recent works c
 enters on rewriting stereotypes and society norms which plague women of co
 lor. The company’s work has been shown at Detroit Dance Race\, Midwest R
 AD Festival\, Oakland Dance Festival\, Detroit Institute of Art\, Ruby Sli
 pper’s Fringe Festival\, Sidewalk Festival\, Noel Night\, Detroit City D
 ance Festival\, The Carr Center\, and Artprize.
