Join us for artist-led workshops in Wainger Gallery on select Thursdays! Each two-hour workshop will feature a different artmaking theme, drawing inspiration from artwork in our collection. Together we will look closely at artworks and learn about the artist’s intentions and processes before making our own works of art with guidance from visiting artists and museum staff.
Join guest artist Danielle deo Owensby for a workshop inspired by the photography in our collection, including Andy Warhol’s iconic Polaroids. Warhol famously carried his Polaroid everywhere, capturing moments and personalities like Pele, Marilyn Monroe, Bette Midler, and Elizabeth Taylor. In this hands-on workshop, participants will experiment with creative posing and design principles to create bold, personalized instant photographs that reflect their unique vision.
Danielle “deo” Owensby is an artist and educator whose work centers on contemporary photography as a means to explore the complexities of memory, trauma, loss, and nostalgia. Through a fusion of installation, performance, and collage, Owensby creates immersive visual narratives that stem from deeply personal experiences, inviting audiences into intimate dialogues that transcend individual memory and touch on universal themes.
Owensby was a ProjectArt Detroit Teaching Artist-in-Residence (2022-2023) and part of the Womxnhouse Detroit 2024 Residency. Their work has been exhibited internationally in venues such as the Melbourne Art Center in Melbourne, Australia; University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and the Grand Rapids Art Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her work has been published in various publications, from art books to blogs, and is in private collections around the globe.
$25 per participant, $20 for ArtMembers, intended for ages 16 and up. Pre-registration is required through our website.
