Design in America
From 1983–1984, the history of the Academy and the Art Museum’s collection was celebrated through the exhibition Design in America: The Cranbrook Vision, 1925–1950, which was organized by and presented at The Detroit Institute of Arts and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, with a third venue in Helsinki, Finland. Design in America explored Cranbrook’s history and impact since its inception, highlighting the influential work of Art Academy faculty and alumni, including Eliel Saarinen, Loja Saarinen, Carl Milles, Charles and Ray Eames, Harry Bertoia, Marianne Strengell, Maija Grotell, Harry Weese, Zoltan Sepeshy, Katherine and Michael McCoy, and many others.
