Expanding in Scope
In 1985, the South Gallery that previously had been remodeled in the 1950s for use as an auditorium was returned to its original use as a gallery for the Art Museum’s primary temporary exhibitions, including surveys of the work of Duane Hanson (1985 and 1990) and Yoko Ono (1989 and 1993). In 1987, Museum Administrator Michele Rowe-Shields initiated the project Keith Haring at Cranbrook: Detroit Notes, for which Keith Haring was invited to paint his graffiti-inspired drawings on the four walls of the North Gallery.
