A New Collections Wing
In 2009, Cranbrook Art Museum underwent a two-year, $22 million renovation and addition, designed by SmithGroupJJR. The project entailed an extensive restoration of Eliel Saarinen’s iconic 1942 structure, which features the Maxine and Stuart Frankel and Frankel Family Galleries, and added a 31,200 square foot Collections Wing. This transformational space allows for open display of the museum’s holdings—more than 6,000 works of art, architecture, craft, and design—in handsome storage vaults accessible to students, academics, artists, and the public alike.
