As the artistic activity at the Academy continued to flourish, so did the Art Museum’s exhibitions program. By the winter of 1940, the collections and exhibitions at the Museum and Pavilion had grown to such an extent that they were straining both the Academy’s staff and the existing gallery space. Cranbrook Art Museum needed a new building.
